Five years on, STI Engineering RFI-148 100 Watt paging transmitter is still a vital part of the Victorian Government's state-wide Emergency Alerting System (EAS). Commissioned in November 2006 to provide a guaranteed method of emergency message delivery to all populated areas of Victoria, the system services 30,000 personnel in the Country Fire Brigade, Rural Ambulance Victoria and the Victoria State Emergency Service.

Implemented by LSE Technology (Australia) Pty Ltd, the system consists of sophisticated comprehensive message management and reporting, along with a 24x7 Network Operations Centre and help desk for network users. Messages are distributed simultaneously via satellite services to more than 230 transmitter sites throughout the state and then broadcast on paging frequencies.

The EAS makes use of the paging transmitter’s inbuilt simulcast options for absolute delay, carrier offset and high precision GPS reference to eliminate the common causes of message loss such as simulcast delay spread and zero beating.

The system also takes advantage of the comprehensive diagnostics available on discrete outputs and the serial interface. The operator can download diagnostics and fault reports from the transmitter remotely and take action immediately. This is especially important for the coordination of maintenance as some transmitter sites are hundreds of kilometres from major cities.

An emergency system requires high availability and the STI Engineering paging transmitter was chosen due to its proven reliability in installations throughout Australia, America and Europe.
